Why Himachal for Beginners?
Unlike Ladakh or Spiti, Himachal's lower-altitude treks (under 4,000m) are more forgiving on acclimatization while still delivering spectacular Himalayan scenery. The trail infrastructure is also better developed.
Best Beginner Treks
The Triund Trek from McLeod Ganj (9 km, 2,850m) is ideal for first-timers — a well-marked trail through oak and rhododendron forests opening to a meadow with jaw-dropping views of the Dhauladhar range.
Standing on Triund at sunset with the Dhauladhar wall turning crimson — that's the moment most people fall in love with trekking.
What to Carry
A 30-40 litre backpack, broken-in hiking boots (never wear new boots on a trek), trekking poles for descents, a rain jacket, and 2 litres of water per day. Leave everything non-essential behind.
Trek Fitness Preparation
Start training 8 weeks before your trek — 45-minute walks daily, stair climbing, and light strength training for quads and glutes. Cardiovascular fitness matters more than raw strength at altitude.
